August 24, 2018– The NWHL and SDHL today announced that the first-ever Champions Cup, featuring the Isobel Cup champion Metropolitan Riveters and SDHL championLuleå Hockey, is coming to the U.S. next month.
Although the event was originally announced as a series at Norrbotten Arena, scheduling challenges resulted in the NWHL inviting Lulea to face the Riveters in a winner-take-all game for the Cup.
“We thank our friends at Luleå Hockeyand the SDHL for working with us and graciously accepting our invitation to host them for a major matchup of league champions in the New York-New Jersey area,” said NWHL Commissioner Dani Rylan. “The NWHL and SDHL are committed to building the value of these remarkable hockey players and the professional leagues, and we view this event as an important step forward for women’s professional hockey.”
The date, location, ticket sales and broadcast information for the 2018 Champions Cup match will be announced in early September.
The NWHL and SDHL added that they are committed to increasing the scale of Champions Cup in future years. After the event was first announced, the leagues were contacted by executives with other women’s professional leagues in Europe looking to be a part of future editions.
“The SDHL and Luleåare excited to come to America and be part of an incredible game for the Champions Cup,” said SDHL Commercial Director Angelica Lindeberg. “Like the NWHL, the SDHL wants to see the Champions Cup concept evolve so that over time we have the best teams from all of global hockey involved. For this inaugural event, we look forward to seeing the hockey fans in the U.S. pack the arena and cheer on these two great teams.”
