Metropolitan Riveters forward Miye D’Oench has earned this season’s first NWHL Player of the Week honor after her two-point performance on Saturday helped the Riveters defeat the Pride 4-1 before more than 2,014 fans at Prudential Center.
When informed of the honor on Sunday night, D’Oench chose to put the focus on her team and the giant step forward the Riveters and the entire league took over the weekend with the landmark NWHL-NHL doubleheader at the home of the New Jersey Devils.
"It was an incredible feeling to get to be a part of Saturday's game,” said D’Oench, who was raised in the metropolitan area. "It’s something I'll never forget. Our coach, Chad Wiseman, reminded us to take a moment and soak it all in before the start of the game and it gave me the chills. And on top of that I was very proud of the performance our team gave. From Kelsey Koelzer’s blocked shots to Alexa Gruschow’s game-changing backcheck, I think we showed how much we wanted to win. A huge thank you to the league, the Devils, and the fans"!
After a game-opening goal by Harrison Browne, D’Oench put the Riveters up 2-0 with a goal late in the first period on a beautiful shot set up by passes from Koelzer and Gruschow. In the second period, D’Oench helped carry the momentum over from the first period when she registered an assist on Gruschow's goal to give the Riveters a 3-0 lead. D’Oench also registered 5 shots in the game.
D’Oench and the Riveters will try to go 2-0 for the first time in team history next week as they travel to Rochester to take on the Buffalo Beauts on Saturday at 7:30.
