Defender played final game on Sunday with the Connecticut Whale

BROOKLYN, NY – Connecticut Whale defender Molly Engstrom has left the team in order to play in the women’s league in Sweden.

Engstrom, 33 years old and of Swedish descent, played her final game with the Whale on Sunday night at her request after informing the team of her decision. A two-time U.S. Olympian, Engstrom played four years at the University of Wisconsin and played in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. After initially announcing her departure from the U.S. National Team and CWHL in 2013, she returned to the ice to join the NWHL for its inaugural season in 2015-16.

“Molly has been an outstanding player for a long time and was a great friend to the NWHL in our opening seasons,” said NWHL Commissioner Dani Rylan. “We wish her great success in Sweden and we will be rooting for her. Should she ever decide to return to the U.S., she will always be welcomed back to the NWHL.”
