Toronto Six Get Stronger with Signing of Emma Woods
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JUNE 29, 2020
TORONTO – Emma Woods, who at age 24 has already carved out a magnificent hockey career that has taken her from All-ECAC honors and the captaincy at Quinnipiac University to the CWHL’s teams in China and last season with Leksands IF in the SDHL, is the latest top player to sign with the Toronto Six. A player who has shown she’s capable as a forward and a defender, Woods has signed a contract to join the Six for their inaugural season in the NWHL.
“It has been seven years since I’ve played back at home in front of friends and family, and the Toronto Six and the NWHL have given me the opportunity to do that for the first time in my professional career,” said Woods, who was born in London, Ontario and raised in Burford. “At the Six, we have incredible ownership and management, and a group of players that are prepared to bring everything to the city of Toronto, the fans, the league, and the future of women’s hockey. I am thrilled to have signed with the Six for their inaugural season, and I can’t wait to see everyone on the ice!”
With Leksands IF in 2019-20, the 5-7 Woods had 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points in 35 games. She finished tied for second in points on the team with Brooke Boquist, who has also joined the Toronto Six.
Prior to playing in the SDHL, Woods played in the CWHL during the league’s two seasons in China. In 56 games, Woods had 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points.
Woods was selected by Buffalo with the 14th overall pick in the 2016 NWHL Draft while she was leading the way at Quinnipiac. She had her best season statistically as a junior when she was 11-23-34 in 38 games, and was Third Team All-ECAC. Woods was named captain for her senior year. Over 147 games at Quinnipiac, she scored 47 goals and had 59 assists for 106 points.
Emma Woods is the 14th player to sign with the Toronto Six. Among the others are defender Emma Greco (Quinnipiac) and forward Taylor Woods (Cornell). Thirteen of the 14 players were born and raised in Canada, and seven of the 14 played in the CWHL.
“Like all of our players on the Toronto Six, Emma Woods is a natural leader and a major talent,” said Toronto GM Mandy Cronin. “She brings positive energy to the ice and the dressing room, and takes pride in being a great teammate. Her versatility as someone who is strong as a forward and a defender is a significant a bonus as well. Emma can jump into any situation and help the Six be successful."
