NJ/NY – Saroya Tinker, an exceptional defender from Oshawa, Ontario who earlier this year completed her collegiate career at Yale, has signed with the Metropolitan Riveters for the 2020-21 season. Last week, Tinker was selected fourth overall by the Riveters in the 2020 NWHL Draft.

“Signing with the Riveters means that I not only get to pursue my dream of playing professionally, but also play alongside strong, amazing women who want to inspire a younger generation and grow the game as well,” said Tinker. “As my career at Yale came to an end, I realized how much I loved the sport and what a blessing it was each day I got to step on the ice. I am incredibly blessed to have this opportunity and hope to help the Riveters have a strong defense in the upcoming season.”

The 5-9 defender played all 32 games last season with Yale, contributing a goal and 11 assists. In her 100th collegiate game, which came against UCONN in the Nutmeg Classic, Tinker had a goal and an assist and was named to the all-tournament team. She played 122 games at Yale between 2016 and 2020.

“Saroya is a smart, smooth-skating defensemen who has a great first pass and can also be a shut-down player in the D-zone,” said Yale head coach Mark Bolding. “Her style of play will allow her to fit in well at the next level.”

Tinker was a member of the Canadian National Team that won the silver medal at the U18 IIHF World Championship in 2016. Developed as a young player with the Durham West Junior Lightning, she also won a gold medal with Team Ontario Red at the OWHA National Championships in 2015-16.
