The Boston Pride look to defend their Isobel Cup championship when they face last year’s runner-up the Buffalo Beauts. This past season the two teams tangled five times and the Pride came out on top each time en route to their 16-1-0 season. The Beauts have won two games in a row for the first time this season and if they beat the Pride for the NWHL title they will have beaten all of the other three Founding Four teams in consecutive games over seven days.

Here is a breakdown of what happened over these games and who to watch for each team in the NWHL title game.

Boston Pride:

Just about every member of the Pride got in on the scoring action against the Beauts this season with 11 different players recording multiple points over the five games. Super rookie Alex Carpenter (3g-6a) and NWHL MVP Brianna Decker (2g-7a) led the way with nine points apiece.

Four of the five wins came in regulation, and the fifth via shootout with Amanda Pelkey netting the only goal in a five-round shootout; in each of the five wins, Boston got the game-winning goal from different players. Five goals over the five games came via three of their blueliners with Lexi Bender and Kacey Bellamy each lighting the lamp twice.

The Pride went 1-for-16 on the power play and surrendered one shorthanded goal. In net Brittany Ott won the first three matchups and Lauren Slebodnick won the last two, each goalie gave up two goals.

Player to watch: Hilary Knight

Last season’s MVP missed some time earlier this season but has been on fire as of late and as under the radar as Hilary Knight can be. In the two games she played against Buffalo this season Knight totaled 5 points (2g-3) on 18 shots on goal. Over her last six games, she has 15 points (7g-8a).

Buffalo Beauts:

The four goals Buffalo scored came from four different players: Harrison Browne (SH), Shiann Darkangelo (PPG), Emily JanigaKourtney Kunichika. Despite surrendering a plethora of power plays to Boston their PK was stellar over the five games.

With all of the power plays comes lots of shots and Beauts goaltenders never saw less than 33 shots in any of the five games. Brianne McLaughlin went 0-2-1 over the first three games with Amanda Leveille taking two regulation losses in the final two.

Player to watch: Hayley Scamurra

After signing with the Beauts (March 10) once her collegiate season at Northeastern ended, Scamurra has played in two games and had quite the impact in both. She had Buffalo’s first goal of the game in their regular season finale win in Connecticut and then followed that up with 1g-2a in the playoff win in New Jersey over the Riveters. Over the two games, she has eight shots on goal, blocked four shots and clearly has been a factor.
