Connecticut Hosts Boston Once More

Who, What, Where:

The Connecticut Whale (4-7-0) will try again to be the first team to defeat the Boston Pride (10-0-0) on Jan. 27th at the Northford Ice Pavilion. The last place Whale continue their home stretch while the Pride continue their month-long road trip with puck drop at 7 p.m. Friday night.

History:

All three games so far between the Whale and Pride were Boston wins; the first two at Warrior Ice Arena in Boston, the last game a little over a week ago at the Northford Ice Pavilion in Connecticut.

  • Brittany Ott shut down the Whale to the tune of 26 saves on Nov. 12th to lead the Pride to a 3-0 win. Her first shutout of the season was assisted up front by Jordan Smelker and Blake Bolden, with each player adding two points for Boston.
  • Brianna Decker’s 10 shots saw her pick up a natural hat trick on Dec. 3rd in Boston, turning a 2-2 game into a Pride 5-2 victory.
  • Despite facing 37 shots, Ott once again recorded a shutout against the Whale in Boston’s 4-0 win on January 15th. Jillian Dempsey scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner, while Alex Carpenter added to her league-leading 15 points with a goal and two assists.

Stats and Such

  • The Pride continue their hot start to the season with sheer dominance on both ends of the ice; their 39 goals lead the league, as does their 11 goals against. However, that goals against total is a resounding 24 less than second-place New York.
  • The Whale, meanwhile, continue to play an up-and-down season; despite being shutout four times on the year, they remain second in the league in goals with 32, right behind Boston.
  • The major issue for Connecticut remains their own net. Their 39 goals against is second worst in the NWHL, despite goaltender Nicole Stock remaining in third place in save percentage for most of the season. She has since fallen to fourth.
  • The Pride remain the best team in the league at adapting after the first period. Despite only scoring six first period goals all season long, their second and third period totals dwarf that number. Their 16 second period goals alone lead the NWHL.
  • The Whale continue to lead the league in shots on goal, with 358 on the season. However, their 8.9 shooting percentage is last in the NWHL, and Connecticut remains the only team to have a percentage under 10. This could explain their current three game losing streak.

Players to Watch

  • Haley Skarupa started the season off hot, recording a hat trick in her NWHL debut. Since then, she has cooled off a bit while posting a season-long line of five goals and five assists for 10 points. However, her 47 shots on net are third in the league, and her 10.6 shooting percentage is bound to face some positive regression soon.
  • Alex Carpenter has emerged as a rookie force, leading the league in points with 15. Her six goals are tied for first, as are her nine assists. However, she is the only player to combine playmaking ability with a keen sense for finishing her shots into 15 points.
