Connecticut Takes On Challenge in Boston

Who, What, Where:

The Connecticut Whale (4-6-0) attempt to take down the Boston Pride (8-0-0) this Sunday, Jan. 15th, at the Northford Ice Pavilion. The 3 p.m. game features the top team in the NWHL in the Pride taking on the second highest scoring team in the Whale.

History:

Both matches this season between the Whale and Pride were held in Boston’s Warrior Ice Arena, consecutive Pride wins.

  • Brittany Ott stopped all 26 shots she faced on Nov. 12th to collect her first shutout of the season in the Pride’s 3-0 win. Jordan Smelker and Blake Bolden each had two points to pace Boston.
  • Brianna Decker’s natural hat trick broke open a 2-2 tie on Dec. 3rd in Boston as the Pride skated to a 5-2 win. Decker herself also fired 10 shots on Shenae Lundberg, who finished with 22 saves on 26 shots.

Stats and Such

  • The Pride come into Sunday’s matchup leading the league in multiple categories, from goals scored (33) to goals against (10) despite only playing eight games so far; every other team has played 10.
  • Both Boston goaltenders, Ott and Lauren Slebodnick, rank in the top two league-wide in both goals against average and save percentage; Ott is first with a 1.14 GAA and .949 save percentage, while Slebodnick ranks second with a 1.50 GAA and .919 save percentage. Ott is also the only goaltender in the NWHL to record multiple shutouts this season, with two.
  • Whale goaltending has also been solid, despite their record. Nicole Stock ranks right behind Ott and Slebodnick in both GAA and save percentage, posting a 2.41 and .910 respectively. She is the only goalie outside of Boston to record a GAA under three and a save percentage above .900
  • The Pride are last in the NWHL in goals scored in the first period with five, while the Whale are first with 12. However, Boston’s strength is their ability to adjust; their second period goal total of 17 is tops in the league, while Connecticut is second with 12. This was shown in their last meeting, when the Whale took a 1-0 first period lead before ending the second period down 3-2.

Players to Watch

  • While Kelly Babstock (6-8-14) continues to lead the league in points, watch out for the “other” Kelli, in Kelli Stack. Her five goals and four assists in eight games place her tied for third on the Whale in points; she also leads the league in face-off percentage with a solid 60.8 percent. Stack was picked first overall in the NWHL All-Star Draft by Team Kessel.
  • For Boston, the player taken right after Stack in the NWHL All-Star Draft drives the Pride, and that is Decker. Taken by Team Steadman, Decker is tied for the league lead in goals with Babstock with six. She also is extremely adept at finding scoring chances, evidenced by her league-leading 48 shots on net.
